THEFT BY GIRL

HELP FOR YOUNG MAN.

MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day.

■ A girl employed as a shorthandtypist in a city office, who stole £5 ia cash and two rings from her employer in order to assist a young man friend, came before Mr. W..R. McKean, SM, in the Police Court this morning. The charges were admitted.

During the hearing the Magistrate and .counsel referred to the .young men of today, the Magistrate suggesting that the indications were that they were becoming "soft."

Semor-Detective Hall said: that Whila her employer was out of the room',for a few minutes the girl took 'the money and the rings. Taxed .-with the tlieft. the girl denied it, but laterVwhen-she heard the police were making inquiries, she admitted her/'guil* and said that she ■ hadVspent the money. Later she told the police that she had acted under a sudden impulse. The girl had never been in trouble before. .

For the girl Mr. W. Noble said that she ran a well-known business man's office while he was in Australia, handling hundreds of pounds without being a penny out in the cash. •• It appeared that the girl had been goin? with a young man out of emplbyment and got herself into debt assisting him. "In my time it was not"the custom for young men to accept assistance from young women earning their own living, but this seems to be the conduct of young men of the present generation." said the Magistrate. "I think there are other reasons indicating: that the young men of today are becoming soft. This girl's employer speaks very highly of her and wants to take-her back; in fact, he wishes to withdraw- the charge, but that is not possible in thia stage of the case." ~■■.. --J.

The case was adjourned, for six months and suppression; of' the girl'! name was ordered. , (
