OBITUARY

MR. F. V. RUTHERFORD

Mr. F. V. Rutherford, well known to many ex-soldiers, died in ChfistchUrch recently, aged 76 years. During the Great War it was Mr. Rutherford's habit to lead the soldiers over the Riniutakas to Trentham, and in this way he led every unit from the 15th to the 32nd Reinforcements. He was presented by the 16th With a gold watch, which he highly prized, and which has become a family heirloom. In later years he led the Anzac Day procession in ChristehUrch, but last Anzac Day he was compelled to drop out after leading the procession part of the Way. . ■

Mr. Rutherford arrived here about 50 years ago in a sailing ship. He waß widely known in the Hutt Valley prior to the war and in Trentham during the ■war. For the past ten years he carried on a small business as a boot repairer in Christchurch. Among other mementoes he had letters from the late King and from prominent men oi New Zealand. In 1928 he went to England to see his three sisters, who are still living. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and a daughter, Mrs. W, H. Yeatts, of Rongotai. The funeral took place in Wellington.
