FIVE DAYS WITHOUT FOOD

(Received July 15, 10.50 a.m.)

MELBOURNE, This Day.

While the Golden State, which arrived today from New Zealand, was in Wellington a man aged 21 stowed away and lived for five days without food and water. He had expected that the vessel wpuld take about four days to reach Australia, and estimated that he could live for that time without food and water. Actually the ship took nine days on the voyage. The stowaway hid in a pile of ropes in the storeroom, and soon after putting to sea the Golden State met with heavy weather and took nearly three "days to travel 70 miles. The stowaway remained hidden throughout the gale, cramped and almost exhausted. On the fifth day he staggered on deck. The police have detained the stowaway, who will remain in custody until Saturday, when he will be taken back to New Zealand.
