■SOCIETY'S REQUESTj

HAMPERED FINANCIALLY

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ; DUNEDIN, July 14.

Requests for the restoration of the former Government grant of £100 a year and for an amendment to the Family Allowances. Act'to> enable 'deserted wives to receive payments under the Act without the si^iature of their husbands were placed before the Minister .of Health (the Hon. P. Fraser) by a deputation from the Society for the Protection of Women; and Children which waited on him today. Dr. Siedeberg-MclCifinon said that until 1932 the' society : had received an annual.grant of £10.0 from the Government, buf during1 the depression that had been withdrawn.. At the same time income from public subscriptions and occasional donations had fallen off. Owing to the depressed conditions the society had been fprced to sell some debentures totalling £300 and it had had to reduce the salaries of the secretary and her assistant. Last year a welcome donation-/of £200 had been received from an airt union. The society felt it had,, a. claim on Government finance, because it lessened to a considerable, extent the work of the courts with respect, to domestic- differences. The Minister ..promised sympathetic consideration to the 'request for the restoration of.the '£rant He stated that the Minister of; fiiternal Affairs, under whose Department: &£ matter came, was.taking, action in regard to the payment of family lallbwahces'.
