THIS IS a wonderful LOT OF FURNITURE and it is seldom that furniture o£ this quality is OFFERED BY AUCTION. A SOLDIER'S PASSING * LORD ALLENBY'S FUNERAL A service of great simplicity, without military ceremonial, was held in Westminster Abbey" recently, when the ashes of Field-Marshal Viscount Allenby were placed in the Warriors' Chapel, by the side of Field-Marshal Viscount Plumer and close by the Unknown Warrior's tomb, says the "Daily Telegraph." The interment was in keeping with the character of the conqueror of Palestine, who in his hour of triumph discarded all pomp and entered Jerusalem on foot by the small Jaffa gate. The words of the psalmist were heard at the service: T was glad when they said unto mo: Wo will bo Into the house, of the Lord. Our feet shall stand hi thy gales: O Jerusalem. There were many uniforms of scarlet and gold and some of khaki, and officers in full-dress uniform showed the mourners to their places. It was strange to hear no organ music at an Abbey service. The old organ has been taken away and the1 new one had riot come. The music that was heard before the service began came from the unseen band of the Irish Guards, who were in the organ loft. They played Sullivan's overture "In Memoriam" and Mackenzie's "Benedictus." It was while this beautiful music filled the Abbey that the candles were lit around the bier. Then came the procession, with the choir singing the opening sentences of the burial service. A hearse brought the coffin containing the casket. The coffin, borne by guardsmen, was draped with a Union Jack, and on it were the Field-Mar-shal's hat, sword, and baton. After the lesson, "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth," the choir sang Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar." IN THE WARRIORS' CHAPFX. After the prayers had been said, the procession, consisting of the bearers and members of Lord Allenby's family, passed on to the graveside in the Warriors' Chapel. Then came the most moving moments of the service. The great congregation stood and could hear' faintly the words o£ the Psalm, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." And then, a little later " — earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust." The procession returned to the choir during the singing of the hymn: "I vow to thco, my country, all earthly things above, /'Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love." ■ The service ended with the "Last Post" and "Reveille," and Chopin's funeral march, and all had witnessed the passing of a great crusader, the deliverer "of the Holy Land, hero of a victory which stirred the emotions of Christian and Jew throughout the world. There were wreaths from the King of the Belgians, from the Army Council, and the British Army, from General Terauchi, War Minister of Japan ("A tribute of affectionate admiration"), the British Legion ("In honoured memory of a great soldier"), and from the Council Committees and Staff of the Officers' Association, Edinburgh University, "In fervent admiration and respectful memory of their beloved Rector." A wreath from Mrs. Winterbotham, Rock Hotel, Gibraltar, bore the lines: Llfo is the Gaoler, Heath the Angel Sent to draw Unwilling Bolts And Set us Free. The pall bearers included several specially chosen because they had served with Allenby in the war. General Sir George Barrow commanded the 4th Cavalry Division, Sir John Shea commanded the 60th Division, which captured Jerusalem, and Sir Steuart Hare commanded the 54th Division. Those who carried Lord Allenby's insignia and medals were also associated with him in his campaigns. Lieut.General Sir Walter Campbell acted as Quarter-Master General to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force; Major-Gen-eral Sir Edward Evans was on the staff of the 20th Army Corps; Major-General A. P. Wavell was Brigadier-General on the General Staff of the 20th Army Corps; and Lieut-Colonel the Earl of Rosebery was Military Secretary to Lord Allenby. Field-Marshal Sir Philip Chetwode commanded the 20th Army! Corps. !
