DAIRY PAYMENTS

TARANAKI OPINIONS

GENERALLY FAVOURABLE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day

Too great a margin between the price for whey butter and the basic guaranteed price arid the heavy responsibility thrown on graders are faults seen in Taranaki in the Government's scheme for- dairy produce payments. Favourable opinions, however, are generally expressed by the industry.

One criticism of consequencq is that the scheme provides for too many differential payments, with a very fine distinction between classes, and with the price varying for every point of the grade. The graders' responsibility is much increased. There is a general feeling of doubt whether it is possible for any grader in New Zealand to compare two cheeses within a point of their respective qualities when they reach the London market. The contention is that there should be fewer payment classes though .differential payments are commended as an excellent encouragement- to produce an article of better quality.

The subtraction of 9s 4d from the basic guaranteed price in payments for first-grade whey butter, is criticised. It is contended that such a difference in price is not borne but by the comparative prices of whey and creamery butter on the London market during the past few years, the average difference being between 4s and ss.
