STRONG SQUADRON
SINGAPORE BASE
ACCOMMODATION FOR CREWS
SINGAPORE, July 14.
The establishment of a strong British naval squadron at Singapore is indicated.by an official announcement today stating that a substantial portion of the £2,000,000 extra vote for the Singapore Base recently approved by Parliament will be spent on building accommodation for warships' crews. Playing fields and recreation facilities for sailors at Singapore, and the construction of wharves, stores, and basins for victualling and munitioning warships have also been approved.
The need for a naval establishment at Singapore to co-operate with the Indies, China, Australian, and New Zealand squadrons has long been recognised by Singapore naval men. At present only the monitor Terror and small warcraft are at Singapore.
