JEWELLERY AND TIES
DECISIONS OF COURT
Applications from manufacturing jewellers, engravers and die-sinkers, and tie manufacturers for an extension of the 40-hour week to 44 hours were refused by the Arbitration Court, decisions to that effect being given today.
The applications on behalf of the manufacturing jewellers were made by four manufacturers representing the industry in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. The Court held that it had not been established that it would be impracticable to carry on efficiently the work of the factories in question on a 40-hour week, and refused the applications.
Four companies manufacturing neckwear made the application for a 44----hour week in tie manufacturing factories. The Court came to a similar conclusion to that arrived at in the case of the jewellers, and refused the application.
