AND BECOMING MILDER

Special forecast for Wellington:—

Moderate to fresh but decreasing southerly winds, with a change later to north-westerlies. Weather fair to fine. Temperatures, cold, but becoming gradually milder.

I The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for southerly winds to the north of Greytnouth and kaikoura. These will be strong at times between Cook Strait and East Cape, but will decrease and will otherwise be light to moderate. Northerlies will prevail south of Greymouth and Kaikoura, and winds will shortly become north-westerly'to northerly in direction -from Cook Strait southwards, and will freshen later in the far south. The weather will be fine generally, although a few isolated showers are still probable at first in the far north and south and on the east coast of the North Island. Showers will extend later to south Westland also. Temperatures will be cold, but will be milder tomorrow. Pressure is still low in the neighbourhood of the Chatham Islands, but is rising there, and an intense anticyclone extends' across the northern part of the Tasman Sea on to New Zealand. A moderate westerly depression, however, is located over the south-western portion of the Tasman Sea. The weather has been fine over most of the Dominion, although cold. A few isolated showers, however, have fallen in the far north and south and along the east coast. The southerly winds were strong yesterday and gale force was reached in places on the east coast south of East Cape. They had, however, generally decreased in force by this morning and had turned to northerlies in the southern part of the South Island. • / Auckland's weather yesterday was fair, although cloudy at times, and a keen south-westerly breeze prevailed. Some showers, totalling four points ot rain, fell during the night, and at 9 a.m. today it was still showery. Wellington had a fine day .with a cold southerly breeze, 6.6 hours of bright sunshine being recorded. A trace of rain fell about 8.35 a.m. today. It was fine and sunny in. Christchurch also, where a cold southerly wind freshened during the afternoon. There were five degrees of frost last night, the weather this morning being clear, fine, and hazy.

In Dunedin a strong south-westerly wind blew yesterday, the morning being sunny and the afternoon dull. There was some rain, totalling 12 points, after 4 p.m., when the wind decreased lin force. Temperatures were very cold there. At 9 a.m. today it was fine with a light northerly wind.
