PERIOD OF WAITING
DUNEDiN MANUFACTURERS
(By Telegraph .—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, This Day. In the ordinary course the July meeting of the general committee of the Dunedin Manufacturers' Association would have been held this week, but it has l>een deferred. A memor-i andum to members states that manufacturers : here and in other centres are deeply immersed in matters arising out of the Government's labour legislation", with.the result that no general business calling for the attention, of the general committee has arisen since the last meeting. Further there have been no new developments in connection /with the federation's request to the Government for' a definite statement regarding the steps to be taken to safeguard 'industries against overseas competition in vtew of the higher costs imposed by the recent legislation. The latest advice from ■Wellington indicates that the Government is'unlikely to announce a final decision about increases in tariff or other safeguarding measures until the claims for exemption from I the 40-hour week have been decided I>y the Arbitration Court.
