AMALGAMATION
THE HUTT VALLEY
PROBLEM
The Lower Hutt Borough Council agreed last evening to being represented by the Mayor at a further conference of Hutt Valley local bodies on the question of amalgamation.
Councillor Cole said he had noticed that two bodies had refused to be represented. In reply the Mayor said that neither had attended the original conference. The Makara County was really not concerned in the question. The, Mayor said he still considered a mistake- had been, made in not first allowing an outside body to report on the boundaries. as= he was sure the coming conference would fail to agree on that question, and, if so, there would ■be; rio-hope of - anything being done until: the Government stepped in. Councillor powse thought the Mayor was too pessimistic, as it was not too late for the conference to set up an outside body to report, before further steps were taken. He was of the opinion that the course suggested by the Mayor at the previous conference would have been the best.
Councillor Hall said the Mayor had put up an unanswerable argument for amalgamation, and he hoped the conference would arrive at an agreement.
