THE HINUWAI
APPROPRIATE NAME
A singularly appropriate name has been chosen for. the new oil barge which is being completed at the Patent Slip for the Union Steam Ship Company, and which will be launched tomorrow afternoon. Hinuwai is the name selected, and when it is translated it is seen to be suitable as well as euphonious.
According to Tregear's Maori Comparative Dictionary Hinu is a word meaning oil, grease, or fatty substance, and wai, as is well known, means water. Thus it will be seen ■that Hinuwai may be broadly, construed as meaning an oil-carrier which floats on water, or in the more simple, if less romantic jargon of modern times, an oil barge.
