MESSAGES EXCHANGED

SCHUSCHNIGG & DUCE

BOND OF FRIENDSHIP

MUSSOLINI'S SATISFACTION

(Received July 13, 10.10 a.m.)

LONDON, July 12.

Dr. Schuschnigg telegraphed to Signor Mussolini informing him of the Austro-German agreement. He says he is sure his Excellency will share in the satisfaction over the accord as a new and efficacious contribution towards peace, and renews his assurances of friendship and his firm desire to continue in future in full accord with his Excellency on the basis of the protocols of Rome and in collaboration with Italy.

Signor Mussolini replied that the accord must be greeted with satisfaction by all who have the cause of peace at heart and marks a great step forward on the road towards reconstruction in Europe and in the Danubian States. "I am especially glad to reciprocate the assurance of friendship and colloboratlon of Italy with the Austrian Government in conformity with the Rome protocols, which will continue as the basis of Italo-Austrian relations in the new establishment of Austrian relations with the Reich, which event the Italian Government and people salute," he added. '

The "Popolo d'ltalia" says that Italy claims to have played an active part in the Austro-German agreement, and the common policy which will follow the agreement ends a dangerous state of affairs which far too often has caused misunderstandings between Italy and Germany. The cause of peace will benefit from the accord, which also brings a great improvement in Italian relations with Germany, "
