POSSIBLES V. PROBABLES

Many of Wellington's loading'senior players were seen in action at Woburn on Saturday in the trials to select the teams to play the Fijians, the Possibles defeating the Probables by 5 goals to 3.

The teams were:— Possibles.—Miss E. Cheyne (HuiaV M«- Smith (Hutt United). Misses si C oss .(C.0.G.); G. Hall (Hutt UnitecO Clarke (C.0.G.). T. Monk (T.O G ) • J Roley (Poneke), M. Pickering

Possibles took up the offensive early, and were soon inside their opponents' circle, but a free-hit relieved the pressure, and play switched to the other end, where accurate work by Mrs. Smith stopped a promising rush. Miss 1.. Pickering broke away down Probables' right wing, centring accurately, but lack of co-operation let a chance go by. For some time Possibles were in front of their opponents' goal, and almost scored when a smart centre by Miss Campbell went across the goal-mouth. A few moments later Miss Neilsoh, Probables' goalie, stopped a swift shot from one of. the forwards. After a corner taken by Miss Camp-bell,-Miss H. Morris sent a beautiful shot from the edge of the circle into the net, making the score Possibles 1,: Probables 0. After a period of unexciting play. Probables took the offensive, but although they were several times within striking distance they were unable to score, largely owing to the excellence of the work of Possibles' full-backs, Mrs. Smith and Miss S. Closs. Hard, fast play took place for some time, neither side gaining any appreciable advantage. Miss McLellan brought the total at half-time up to 2-0 in favour of Possibles with an accurate scoring shot. ,;

, In the second half Miss McTigue replaced Mrs. O'Donnell, Miss Mclndoe replaced Miss Mack, Miss Campbell and Miss Pickering changed positions, and the two goalies changed sides. Miss A. Walker replaced Mrs. Sundgren. Probables did better in the second half, while Possibles appeared to tire more quickly. However, the latter side again attacked at the outset, taking play down to the circle, where Miss Pickering netted from the edge. Miss Simpson netted 'another a moment later. Mrs. Cleverley netted Probables' first goal- following in quickly after a scramble, - and. Miss G. Home further reduced' Possibles' lead by netting again for Probables. However, a high shot from Miss Morris had the goalie beaten, bringing Possibles' score to. 5. The final goal of the match, was scored by Miss A. Walker, who put a soft shot past the goalie, and the game ended: Possibles 5, Probables 3.

Messrs. W.J. Dredge and A. J. Ross were the umpires. '
