WALSH CUP RACE

SCRATCH MEN SCOOP POOL

R. Barber (scr) took a double when he accounted for first place and fastest time in the Eoneke Amateur Cycling Club's 33-mile race for the Walsh Cup on Saturday afternoon. R. Dutton (scr) was narrowly defeated, and had to be content' with second place and second fastest time. D. Evans claimed third place after making a 400 yards sprint. Barber and Dutton made their effort 200 yards from home, and these two finished with several lengths to spare from Evans (3min), with B. Walsh (3min), L. Walsh, K. McLeod A. Huxford, and R. Evans next in that order. .. • ..

The front-markers had a hard race, ihere were not many of them together, iney made a gallant effort, but were outnumbered by the "break" and scratch groups, who, combining well, soon had the race in hand. The scratch men caught the 3- and 6-min. riders at five miles to go, and soon after R. Loader (scr), who looked a prospect,'? punctured. Among the limit riders N. Doig (13mm) rode a good race. Results are:—

R. Barber (scr), 81m 7 l-ss, first place and fastest time; R. Dutton (scr), 81m 7 2-ss, second and second fastest time; D. Evans (3min), 84m 8 l-ss, third and fourth fastest time; L. Walsh (scr), 87m 8 3-ss, fifth and third fastest time.

A junior race of eight miles resulted in S. Roberts (2min) winning nrst place and time honours (20m 235) and N. Hewitt (2Jmin) was second and l. Walsh gained second fastest time. Next week a 17-mile time trial, restricted to 71-inch and under gears, is to be held.
