HUTT BEAT ST. GEORGE

It was at the Randwick School ground that St. George sustained their first defeat, Hutt registering an unexpected win by 18 points to 6. The form of the championship winners was unbelievably poor. Without the services of Cootes and Sutton, representative packmen, they were completely outclassed. With the exception of Moisley all played far below their best. The Hutt forwards dominated the game, Burns proving an able leader. Good form was displayed by the Quinn brothers and Metherill, particularly in the loose rushes. McLellan, the veteran hooker, gave his team a one-sided share of the ball from the scrums. In the backs; too, St. George disappointed. Bayley at half-back played well, but Timrhins and Gladding sacrificed running for kicking. At times Gladding was .inclined to selfishness. Swanberg, first' five-eighth,:was often caught in possession.

The St. George lead of 3 to 2 at halftime Game from the only combined rush they made in this spell. Smart tackling by Orr and Lilburne cut short many St. George movements. Orr, the promoted half-back, has improved his play each match. In the second spell Hutt • were always on top, with Lilburne. Orr, Burns, and McLellan prominent. Mailman, the St. George winger, made some'; fine runs but was unsupported. The score would have' been greater but for the solid display of Spencer at full-back.. His tackling, rush-stopping; • and long kicking, were of high order.' All the Hutt points in this session came from Lilburne —three tries arid two goals. The St. George try-was scored by Grace after five of the backs had handled.
