EASTBOURNE V. HUTT

A close score and a number of fast back and forward fnovements, particularly in the second spell, made the game between Eastbourne and Hutt interesting from a spectator's point of view. In the middle of a patch of ragged play, a brilliant piece of speculation would frequently bring onlookers to their feet. Many times the ball shot from one twenty-five to the other and back again, several times in rapid and bewildering succession. The Eastbourne backs, while lacking penetrative power, kept the Hutt backs very well marked. The Hutt backs were so beaten on attack that they several times let the Eastbourne, forwards through. Although both teams were evenly matched, Hutt had the better .of the game, at least in the first spell. The small but decisive factor that turned the balance in the Eastbourne favour was tha inadequacy, on more occasions than one, of the Hutt tackling. The teams were:—

Hutt.—Jarman; Nees, Hansen, Phillips; Manders, Sargisson; Zane; Francis, Potter, Saulbrey, Mclntosh, Coulston, Barry, Devine, and Andrews. Eastbourne.—Crisp; McMillan, D. , Plank, Walling; Fleming, J. Plank; Orme; Griffiths, Berry, Robinson, Waite Clarke, N. Dellabarca, J. Dellabarca! and Guiniven.

Hutt won the toss and Eastbourne kicked off into the sun and wind. Play ranged for some time up and down .the field, with a slight territorial advantage to Hutt. From a loose scrum the ball went out to Hansen, who gotover'with a fine run in the corner. Nees's kick was short. Hutt again attacked and Crisp saved several dan, gerous situations. Eastbourne retaliated and N. Dellabarca scored in the corner. Fleming just missed the kick, i Indecisive play followed until Andrews, pursuing a short kick, scored in the corner, and the first half ended: Hutt 6. Eastbourne 3.

_ Play in the'second, half was exceedingly fast. From an opening made by Hahsen Manders passed to Nees, who outsprinted several opponents to score in the corner. Play swung back to the Hutt end, and Griffiths swerved through the Hutt defences and scored. Fleming converted. The try that changed the result of the game came from an opening made by N. Dellabarca, Plank passing to Walling, who madel a fine run to score. Hutt looked as though they were going to get f /er, but the final whistle prevented further score, the game ending: Eastbourne 11, Hutt 9.
