PRICE OF BREAD

POSSIBLE ADVANCE

The possibility of a revision of prices in the wheat-growing, flourmilling, and baking industries, in order to offset the increased labour costs imposed or to be imposed is at present the subject of discussion by the various interests affected in Canterbury, states the Christchurch "Press."

Wheat farmers are liable to be affected by awards and industrial agreements other than those relating to harvesting, and in common with other farmers they anticipate the possibility of a move towards shorter hours for farm workers. In well-informed circles, adds the "Press," it is considered that, if it is found that wages and conditions further increase the cost of production, the Government will no doubt favourably review the price at present paid to farmers for their wheat, when fixing next season's prices.

The millers entered into an arrangement with the Government on February 8 last, and the' basis of that! arrangement was that they had to restore the 10 per cent, cut made in wages in 1931. However, the hours were not changed from 48 a week. Hours for mills will now be reduced conceivably to 40 a week. This will naturally increase the cost of manufacture, and doubtless the millers will ask the Government to take this factor into consideration when making arrangements for the gristing of next year's crop. When the bargain was made between the Government and the millers in February there was, of course, no suggestion of the mills being required to operate on a 40-hour week.

Labour plays a fairly big part in proportion to output in the baking trade, but the extent to which bakers will be affected will not be known until their industry has been reviewed by the Arbitration Court.
