IMPROVEMENT TOMORROW

Special forecast for Wellington:— Southerly gale, decreasing: tomorrow. Weather cold and squally, with frequent showers and possibly hail, but an improvement by tomorrow. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for strong south-westerly to southerly winds, with gales in places, but winds will decrease gradually later. The weather will become fine soon on the West Coast of the South Island, but elsewhere it will be changeable and squally with passing showers, and with hail or sleet in places. It should gradually improve tomorrow, however, but temperatures will be cold and hardirosts can be expected tonight in the South Island. During yesterday changeable and showery conditions were experienced in districts with a westerly aspect, while in eastern areas the weather was mainly fair. Winds were mostly moderate south-westerlies in . the northern half of the North Island! and westerly to northerly elsewhere. Since last night, however, there has been a decided change for the worse owing to a sharp depression rapidly crossing the Dominion. Strong winds have sprung up and gale force has been reached in places, especially about and to the south of Cook Strait, and a cold south-westerly change had by this morning extended as far north as Cook Strait. Rain has become more widespread, and in the South Island snow has fallen on the higher levels and hail on parts of the East Coast. Arthur's , Pass reports four inches of snow as having fallen up to 9 a.m. today. - ' Auckland has continued to have unsettled and showery weather. A southwesterly wind has prevailed there and this has freshened since last night. Wellington's weather yesterday morn. I ing was cloudy with occasional sharp | showers, but it had cleared by midday and the afternoon was brilliantly Tine, 4.7 hours of bright sunshine being recorded. A north-westerly breeze prevailed, but this freshened in the night and rain fell between 3.30 and 5 a.m. the total fall at Kelburn for the twenty-four hours being one of 31 points. At 9.45 a.m. today a strong and cold southerly wind set in, accompanied by showers. Christchurch had a fine and sunny day with-a light and variable wind. Early this morning, however, a southwesterly gale sprang up, and conditions since then have been cold and boisterous with frequent rain and hail showers. Up to 9 a.m. today the rainfall had totalled 38 points. In Dunedin the day was calm and sunny, but it became overcast early in the evening. A strong south-wester-ly wind followed with rain squalls.'
