YOUNG MAN CONVICTED

THEFT AND FALSE CHEQUES

"This man has quite a bad list of previous convictions, including breaking and. entering, theft, and receiving," said Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell in the Magistrate's Court today, when Alfred John Buhck, a labourer and grocer, aged 27, appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., on one charge of theft and two of obtaining money by false pretences. He was charged with the theft on June 8 of an overcoat and a Commercial Bank of Australia cheque book, of a total value of £6 ss, the property of James Keid; with obtaining from John Cotton, at Petone, On June 9 £1 10s in money and an overcoat valued at £3 10s by means of a valueless cheque for £5 10s drawn on the Commercial Bank of Australia in J. Richards's favour and signed S. Brett; and with obtaining from Alvar Franklin Read, of Manthel Motors, Ltd., the sum of £6 13s 6d by means of a valueless cheque for £100 drawn in favour of Manthel Motors and signed S. P. Read. Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell saidf that James Reid, a resident of Hastings, visited Wellington and parked his car in Panama Street. On his return, he found the coat and cheque book gone. Detectives Ritchie and Hay found the coat in a pawnshop, where it had been sold for 15s. The following day the accused received an overcoat and jus change for a cheque which he presented to a Petone tradesman. The third charge related to the purchase of a motor-car. The accused presented a cheque for £100, for which he obtained £6 13s 6d change. He represented himself on that occasion as coming froni a well-known Hawke's Bay ■f smilv The accused, who pleaded guilty, asked for a term of hard labour He was convicted and sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour on each of the three charges, the sentences on the first two charges to be cumulative.
