ILLEGAL POSSESSION
THREE OPOSSUM SKINS
Charged with being illegally in possession of three opossum skins, Arthur William Fisher, a labourer, aged 32, appeared before Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today._ Detective-Sergeant I-.. B. Hevell said that yesterday it came to the notice of Dctectives Tripney and Hay that the accused was selling opossum skins. His explanation when approached was that he had caught the animals when recently trapping in the South Island, and that at first he did not know what
they were. He came to Wellington, and when short of money tried to sell the skins. The penalty was £10 for each skin.
"Prosecutions of this nature are very numerous in the South Island," said the Magistrate.
"I did not know until I tried to sell them, that I was liable," was the defendant's explanation.
He was convicted and fined £2 and costs. The skins were ordered to be forfeited.
