A PROFITABLE REFUSAL
Excavations have for some time been taking place at Weoley Castle, an historic ruin on a Birmingham Corporation housing estate, and the immediate surroundings of the castle are being beautified and preserved as an open space, says the "Manchester Guardian."
| When the Corporation appealed for fluids to carry on ihe work of excavation and preservation a letter was sent to Mr. Bernard Shaw. His reply, written in red ink across the original letter of appeal, was read at a meeting at Birmingham Council House today. He wrote:—
"Better sell the old place to somebody in America. I have no influence in Birmingham. There are dozens of leading citizens who can afford the needed money much better than I can. Besides, if Birmingham does not want the castle why should I interfere?"
A suggestion was made that the letter should be auctioned, and it finally went to Councillor A. S. Giles at ten guineas. Five guineas bid by the Crescent Theatre of the Municipal Players were also added to the fund, which thus benefit to the extent of £15 15s from Mr. Shaw's refusal.
