SAVE THE SHIPS
"Don't let; us put too big a strain on the ships,", said Mr. : Walter Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, at the British Sugar. Beet Society's • luncheon, at which he was the chief guest, recently. "Fifty per.;cent. of the food consumed by the cows that produce our .winter milk is imported. We may for a time buy our Jtood from the world below its production cost, but if we forget how to produce it for ourselves we shall look foolish when the day. comes for the world to turn round to us and say: 'Pay: us. the full price.'" Before the luncheon Mr. Elliot presented over 160 prizes to' farmers who had grown beet in the past year under the Ministry's educational and research scheme.
