ROAD CYCLING

GOOD HANDICAPPING

WEST CUP CONTEST

The Poneke Cycling Club held its annual race for the West Cup over a 24 miles course on Saturday afternoon. Perhaps the most notable feature of

the race was the good handicapping

by Mr. Matson, for the scratch, 2-min-ute, and 4-minute riders finished within the space of 10 seconds. A field of sixteen started and all finished. McLeod was voted most unfortunate, for twice he had machine trouble when in the lead. •

Pye and Doig (2min) led to the turn i by which time the whole field had closed up. Followers anticipated the , scratch riders to go right through the field, but they had not counted upon . the 2-minute quartet—B. Walsh, C. Roberts, D. Evans, and K. McLeod— who, from the turn "burned up the miles," and after catching Huxford and R. Evans (4min), two splendid workers, turned the pace on even more. Four miles from the finish this j group passed the leader N. Doig (9min), who had ridden well, and were "dog-

ged" by L.' Walsh, R. Bai'ber, Dutton and R. Loader by a mere 300 yards, but nevertheless, they kept away and whet commencing on the sprint for honour: up the straight were still 70 yards tc the good. Huxford led out early anc snatched alO yards lead. He was fol lowed by D. Evans, who drew nearlj level but Huxford just managed tc keep in front, close behind came B Walsh, R. Evans, C. Roberts, and K McLeod. It was the best finish seen this season. Hardly had the leaders finished when the second tussle, this time for fastest time honours, took place. R. Barber outsprinted the others oy; two lengths, Dutton, L. Walsh, and Loader being next. Results are:— Placings.—A. Huxford (4min), 63min 41sec, 1; D. Evans (2min), 61min 41 1-5 sec, 2; R. Walsh (2min), 61min 41 2-5 sec, 3; R. Evans (4min), G3min 41 3-5 sec, 4.
