A HUGE SUCCESS

ASHBURTON'S INCREASE

PARISIENNE WINS STAKES

A record crowd attended the Winter I Meeting of the Ashburton Trotting Club on Saturday, a striking illustraI ti.on of the growing popularity of Hie J Sapling Stakes, on which the invcslj ments were the largest on record. Bet- ] ting from the start was keen and sus- | tained, and the total investments were I £23,340, compared with £14,336 10s | last year. It was one of the most successful meetings in the long and steady progress of this club, and the unexpectedly large attendance resulted in hundreds of pounds being shut out of the totalisator on' the last two races. The Sapling Stakes was a fine race, ending in decisive victory for Parisienne, with Frisco Boy an unlucky runner Cloudy Range won the County Handicap like a really good horse, and was not fully extended. POOR TROTTING.

From 43yds, Guy Hugo kept solidly to his gait after an exemplary beginning in the Longbeach Handicap, and won in hollow fashion. He always looked the winner after collaring the pacemaker Swift Guy at the top of the straight. Great Linnet, who galloped entering the back and gained ground as a result, came on for second, easily accounting for Lord Ernleigh, who was inclined to mix his gait in the run home. Patty Todd, who was unsteady, was at the head of the others. ;It was not a good race. The Americanj bred filly Fantine broke up completely at the start. She is not ready yet. FROM WELL BACK. Renown's Best outclassed a large field in the Trial Handicap. She was drawn in the second row of the limit i division, and through the densenessj of the field and breaking horses she i was placed at a 60yds advantage at the end of two furlongs. She moved up smartly at the far turn, and, waiting until the straight entrance, she then came right away to win by as much as she liked, apparently. Such a performance, while evidently "speaking volumes iOr her future, also emphasised the weakness of the older horses, and the greenness of the younger ones. Fine Art, who came on fairly for second, has not lined up to his early promise. Reymere was a moderate third, and Lord Axworthy was the best of the others. He does not stay well. Buddy cracked hearty for a mile, then disappeared altogether.

, A CUP HORSE. ■ Cloudy Range never left the result • of the Ashburton County Handicap in . doubt over the last quarter. He was content, to remain in the rear until : about five furlongs from home, where : he made a brilliant move to get on ; terms with the leader, Young Frank, within a furlong. He took charge as they reached the straight, and the others were all under the whip in their futile efforts to save their faces. Cloudy Range qualified for a 4min 26sec mark, and it is understood that this will be the limit of the next New Zealand Cup. De Soto added to his task by losing 60yds soon after the start, but in finishing second he probably did as well as he would have done in any circumstances. He did not come home straight. Peter Locanda just struggled home from Taxpayer, who was putting in a determined claim. Waress, Francis Lincoln, and Guy Junior were next. Young Frank stopped quickly after making most of the running. FRISCO BOY UNLUCKY. Parisienne won the New Zealand Sapling Stakes with a brilliant burst of speed that had Southern Chief measured off half a furlong from the post, but time may show that Frisco Boy was the unlucky contestant. He was carried back by the tiring Becky Direct at a critical stage of the race, and this cost him several lengths, a disadvantage that possibly- made a difference to the result. He finished all over Southern Chief and Loyal Pat, but could not possibly overhaul Parisienne, who was able to make her run earlier. '

The handling of Southern Chief left something to be desired. He Was a trifle slow to begin, but was then rushed up on the outside, and was three out most of the way. He was hailed the winner when he showed up with Zincali and Loyal Pat at the home turn, but when Parisienne ranged up to them it was apparent that the favourite was in difficulties. He had to take severe-chastisement'in the run home, and just got there from Loyal Pat for third money. Despite his bad run, Southern Chief does not stri fee one as the champion he has been claimed to be. A few more such hidings as that he received on Saturday will not improve this highly-strung member of a notoriously temperamental family on' the dam's side.

Loyal Pat went a good solid race, and Zincali showed a lot of speed tfter a slow beginning. Becky Direct atired after leading for about a mile. She was backward in condition.

Parisienne is a filly by Rey de Oro from Yenot (dam of Lilian Bond) and is owned by Mrs. D. R. Revell, of Auckland, and trained by R. B. Berry, who drove her. Parisienne is a lightly.-made, speedy-looking chestnut, and she was more forward than most. She was broken in and educated by Hector Gray.

A MISHAP. On Parade outclassed the other live with chances in the Acton Handicap, his task being simplified by Golden Mist and Triclifl falling and disorganising the field, which made it a race between Wild Dreams, On Parade, Green man tie, Village Guy, Rare Rey, and Racketeer only. Wild Dreams made play to the straight, where On Parade cleared out to make no race of it over the last furlong. Village Guy was some lengths behind Wild Dreams, his effort being rather belated. Greenmantle was disappointing. • He caved in on reaching the straight. Rare Key was a fair fourth. DISCORD ALL THE WAY.

Discord made a good field of tro: ers look cheap with an end-to-en iisplay of perfect trotting in the Maj ield Handicap. The only "one wh :ver looked like giving her any oppc ition was King's Guard, who wreckei vhat small chance he had of doing si >y breaking before the straight en ranee. He recovered in time to mak . bold bid in the straight, and finishei ive lengths from Bessie Parrish, wh< a "street" behind Discord. Se; Jift's finishing run was good, thougl t was not begun soon enough, am taclaim went an improved race.' Guy o' Mine broke badly and nevei aoked like. settling down. Nicoy; 'ent off pacing and took no real par

in the race, and Admiral Bingcn doubled his handicap at the outset.

Discord is a vastly-improved mare. At one time she was regarded as nothing more than a solid plugger, and she has developed brilliance of a degree that must carry her to success in top company. She is young as trotters go, being a five-year-old by Wrack from the El Carbine mare Echo.

HOT FAVOURITE DOWNED. Gaillard, backed like a foregone conclusion for the Tinwald Handicap, was buried in a dense field after half a mile, and a great effort round the majority crossing the top was successful in disposing of everything except Casanova, who went one of his few good races and won really well by two lengths.

Lucky Jack was checked half-way home, but would not have done any better than third. Casanova was interfered with and broke when in the thick of the fight at the top of the stretch. Llewellyn's Pet was right up fourth, closely attended by Red Flush and Our War. Harlequin, Repeal, Royal Palm, and Civic, who were the leaders' most of the way, were buried in the final chase.

Casanova, is a three-year-old colt by Wrack from Pearchild, a noted family. He has been'a disappointment, and the change to L. A. Maidens's stable has worked some improvement. A DESPERATE FINALE. There was a desperate finish between four horses in the Winter Handicap,

and Noble Prince survived by 4 a bar neck. Marie Celeste made all th pace to the straight, . where Nobl Prince was ready to take charge. H looked certain of victory when his o'c jectivo had been gained, but was chal ienged on all sides, with Rongomai Subsidy, and Morello all on his ham mer as the line was crossed. Noble, Prince just won,, but he pu up a fine performance in a stronj field for the class. Subsidy ran a sur prisingly good race, but nothing finish cd faster than Rongomai. Morelli was right up fourth, and should be ar I early winner. Rocks Ahead was no (far away. Big Author was slow tc begin and could not get clear in th< run home. Both are from La Franz, a mare , by Franz, from the American-bred Al. j F., who was bred with a double strain of the Wilkes blood. King Franz was sired by Native King, whose fullbrother, Nelson Derby, a Great North- " ern Trotting Derby and Auckland Trotting Gup winner, sired Franz Derby. Native King and Nelson Derby were sons of Nelson Bingen and Norice, who also bred back to the Wilkes line. King Franz won well at Wanganui on a preparation that consisted chiefly of work in a milk float, and registered 3min 35sec off 3min 49sec. However, when given regular track work he gave inglorious displays at Manawatu, refusing to go away or trot solidly. The showing of Franz Derby was more inspiring and she looks likely to prove useful. After winning at a sports meeting, she was'raced at Awapuni, where she ran second in 3min 36sec. Taken to Hamilton, she won at her next start in a manner that left a good impression. ' Franz, sire of La Franz, was a fullbrother to the former champion trotter, Fritz, and was by Vancleve from Fraulein, a mare by Berlin from Woodburn Maid. Vancleve was a grandson of Hambletonian 10, and one of the best bred horses imported to New Zealand. Before he did any stud duty in the Dominion he was sent to Australia, where he soon made a name for himself as a progenitor of high-class stock. AMONG THE PACERS Great Admiral, probably the best trotter in the Auckland Province at present, is to race against the pacers on the first day of the Auckland fixture. He has only had one run in this division, competing at the last Auckland Winter Meeting in the novice event. He struck interference in the first furlong on that occasion, and lost i lot of ground, but /or which he would undoubtedly have taken a great ieal of beating, as he finished like a ;rain in third position. He has gone jn satisfactorily of late, and the track vould only have to be heavy for him ;o take a lot of beating in the Hobson iandicap next week.
