STREET DAYS
COLLECTION BOXES
"There is a rumour going round that on the last street day unauthorised persons went round the town collecting," said Councillor W. Duncan at the meeting of the Wellington City Council last night. He asked if it would be possible for the City Solicitor to draw up a bylaw governing the matter, or the bylaws committee to give consideration to" it.
"All boxes/that are supposed to be used are issued by us; they have a number, and they are sealed," said the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop). There was the possibility, of course, of some unscrupulous person making boxes like them. He would get the matter looked into to see if the present position could be made safer.
Councillor R. A. Wright, M.P., asked whether it was not a fact that all contributors to street day collections received a badge or some token.
Councillor Duncan: Oh, no.
"I have always had a badge given to me," said Councillor Wright. He suggested that if the persons in chargc of the collections took ordinary precautions with the boxes there should be no great danger. It was true a person might take a box and might get a lot of badges, but it was also true that a man could go into a bank and rob it
