Chirgwin, winner of this year's Newbury Summer Cup, is an Irish horse who was transferred to England by Mr. Barnett near the close of last year. Formerly trained by J. T. Rogers at The Curragh, he was only once a winner as a two-year-old and once last year, each time at The Curragh, but his minor placings Included a third in the Irish Two Thousand Guineas, won by his stablemate Museum, and a second in the Baldoyle Derby, won by African Lily, another stablemate. Rogers, it will be recalled, scooped the pool in the Irish classics last year, and the three place-fillers in the Two Thousand were from his stable, Chirgwin 'being the elect'in that race. Chirgwin's sire, Trigo, one of Blandford's sons, won the English Derby and St. Leger for Mr. Barnett in 1929. His dam, Undaunted 11, is a French-bred mare whom Mr. Barnett imported in 1931, being a daughter of Teddy and the Spearmint mare Persistent.—"Rangatira."
