WEATHER IMPROVING
NORTHERLY WINDS AGAIN
,* Special forecast for Wellington:— | Moderate to fresh but decreasing southerly winds, with a change to northerlies by tomorrow. Weather cold and changeable with passing showers at times, but soon improving. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for moderate to strong but decreasing southerly winds from Canterbury northward, and for light to moderate northerlies thence southward. Northerlies, however, will extend shortly to beyond Cook Strait and will later freshen. There will be passing showers at first jn eastern districts between Cook Strait and East Cape, but the weather in that area will improve and elsewhere it will be fine, although rain will develop tomorrow in the far south. Temperatures , will be cold, with many frosts tonight.
The depression responsible for yesterday's cold and changeable weather and for the scattered showers which fell in most districts had by this morning disappeared eastward. An intense anticyclone now extends. on to the Dominion, its centre being over the southern portion of the South Island. Hence the greater part of the country reported a decided improvement in the weather this morriing, although showers were still falling in a few places between Cook Strait and Gisborne, and temperatures were still cold. Southerly to south-westerly winds have been the rule except in the far south, and these were still strong in places in the North Island this morning while being mainly light in the South Island.
Auckland's weather yesterday was cloudy and showery with a moderate south-west wind, and three points of rain were recorded. It cleared, however, during the evening, and it was fine and cold this morning with a south-easterly breeze. Wellington's weather was cold and for the most part cloudy, one hour of bright sunshine being recorded during the afternoon. Occasional showers accompanied the southerly wind which has freshened since last evening, the rainfall at Kelburn being 20 points and in Lower Hutt 19 points. . Fair but chilly weather prevailed in Christchurch with a light southwesterly breeze. A trace of rain fell there yesterday about 10.30 a.m. and there were some light showers early this morning. But by 8.30 a.m. the weather was fair again with a southwesterly wind. It was sunny in Dunedin early yesterday morning, but most of the day j was cold and cloudy and showers fell during the afternoon with a fresh south-westerly wind. At 9 a.m. today it was cloudy with a gentle wind from the west.
