FAMOUS HOUSES TO GO

When the Abingdon Street, Westminster, site for the King George statue was decided upon, it was apparent a big demolition scheme would have to be carried out, said the "Daily Telegraph" recently. This is the site which the statue subcommittee of the King George National Memorial Fund has recommended to the executive committee. Under the plan all the property in Old Palace Yard and in Abingdon Street to Great College Street would be demolished. The total area covers 48,660 sq, ft. The property to be demolished includes the house at 5 Old Palace Yard, where Labouchere lived. The entrance hall, as it is today, was built on the model of the entrance to Labouchere's home in Florence, where he died in 1912. A secret recess is still to be seen in the library. One section of shelves is filled with dummy books. This panel can be opened, revealing a big recess and a doov-r Heading 'into another compartment.
