The "New York Times" representative aboard the Queen Mary says that with the liner steaming at an average speed of 30.64 knots, Britain's bid for ( the blue riband of the Atlantic seems within grasp. During the 25 hours irom noon on Friday until noon today, allowing for the hour's change in > time, the Queen Mary steamed 766 ; nautical miles, compared with the Normandie's third-day record run of 756. The ship's officers still insist that no determined effort is being made *o establish a record, and expect to reach the Ambrose Light at 11 o'clock on Monday morning, as scheduled, and to dock soon afterwards. In the afternoon thick fog diminished hopes that the liner would set a new Atlantic record. Speed was sharply reduced at 4.15 p.m. Sir Edgar Britten, the commander, declared: "Everything is going according to plan. The r«;ults far exceed our expectations. We are not out to show off or to aim at fantastic records." The French liner Normandie. on her maiden voyage a year ago, broke all previous records by making the west> bound passage from Bishop's Rock to the Ambrose Light in 4 days 3 hours 2 minutes, an average speed of 29.98 knots. The daily averages were as follows: —Thursday, May 30, 29.76 knots; Friday, May 31, 28.71! knots; Saturday, June 1, 29.92 knots; Sunday. June 2, 32 knots. The 24 hours' run to noon on May 30 was 744 miles and on June 1 748 miles. On the east-bound passage the Normandie made the run m 4 days 3 hours 25 minutes, an average of 30.35 knots, beating the record of the German steamer Bremen by 12 hours 47 minutes. The best day's run on the return passage was 30.91 knots over 24 hours, beating the recora of 30.11 knots previously held by the Italian liner Rex.
