CLOUDY RANGE AGAIN

CANTERBURY PARK TROTS j (Special to the Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, May 30. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's Winter Meeting was held in fine but cold weather, following on showers in the morning. Good fields provided excellent sport. A bright feature of the proceedings was the strict attention to schedule time in starting the races. It was a great performance, the best seen in these parts since the thirty-five-min-ute interval was instituted. For seven races the signal that the totalisator was balanced was on time, while the eightn race was started no more than five minutes behind schedule. The totalisator investments were £ 16,609 10s, compared v.'ith £19,199 10s on the Kings Birthday last year. The Yaldhurst Handicap was spoilt through many in the field breaking. With half the journey covered Sister Mary and Tyrone Lass were in charge from Mataunga, Helen's Bay, Wahnooka, and Isabel Patch. Along the back Helen's Bay broke, Sister Mary going on from Wahnooka, with Mataunga, and Reward handy. Wahncokp led to the straight to win easily t»y three lengths, and Sister Mary outstayed Reward fo.r second. Isabel Patch, Little Reta, and Mataunga were next. Great Wood and Kuini broke at the start.

Stirling Lady and Golden Mist were slow to go off in the Peninsula Handicap. Doris Derby soon took charge from Broughshane and Cantata, but Cantata was in front after two furlongs, Tricliff being fourth. Tricliff and Golden Mist were in front at the home turn, with Frisco Lady and Gallant Knight moving up. Golden Mist then took the lead, but Frisco Lady ran past him to win easily by three lengths. Rare Rey finished strongly to take second place from Golden Mist, who put up a good performance after his slow start. Gallant Knight and Cadiz were in the bunch behind the placed horses. ANOTHER CUP HORSE. | Cloudy Range registered another fine effort to win the Winter Handicap, and, ! under last year's limit, he is another !Cup- candidate for Mr. G. J. Barton. Little Nelson and Gunfire broke at the start. Sea Gift led out from Agile, with Grace McElwyn and Peter Locanda heading the others, Guy Junior, Cloudy Range, and Queen Author being next after half a mile. There was j no change at the mile post, where Ray-! dus moved up fast, he and Guy Junior joining Sea Gift in the lead starting the last round, with Grace McElwyn and Cloudy Range next. Raydus led Grace McElwyn and a bunch along the back. Raydus and Peter Locanda showed the way to the straight from Cloudy Range, who finished brilliantly, to win by two lengths, while Raydus beat Peter Locanda by a neck. Rey Soec, finishing fast, was at the head of tUe others, then Francis Lincoln.

Oil Parade tried to lead all the way in the Ellesmere Handicap and failed only in the last bit. When the field settled down Tricliff, Symmetry, Banffshire Lad, Southern Smile, and Full Hand were handy to the leader. Southern Smile joined the leader three furlongs from home, these two leading Bare Key and Full Hand to the straight, with Doris Derby moving up. Southern Smile won with something to spare by a length from On Parade, while Full Hand stalled off Doris Derby, by a head. Rare Rey was close up.

The Railway Handicap was topped off with art exciting finish. Isabel Derby and Rongomai led out, but with half the journey gone Tangatu headed them, the others being bunched, except John Jinks and Bingen Palm, who' were last. Kongomai joined Tangatu three furlongs from home and they led Young Frank and Bingen Palm to the straight. Tangatu then retired, leaving Rongomai in front, but she was stopping at the end, Young Frank heading her on the post. Bingen Palm was three lengths back, with Ciro heading the others. The winner's performance was a good one, for he tangled soon after the start.

Only seven trotters turned out for the Aviation Handicap, and it was not a good race. King's Guard and Discord were soon in the lead and they stayed there, King's Guard winning decisively. Bessie Parrish gradually wore the others down to be a poor third. The winner's performance was attractive.

The Stewards' Handicap was a good race all the way. Pronto Bingen led out from Homeward and Peter Locanda, and at the end of half a mile Raydus, Reporter, and Llewellyn's Pride were at the head of the others. Homeward dropped out along the back. Raydus joined Pronto Bingen in the lead two furlongs from home. Raydus led to the straight and went on to win decisively by a length and a half. Llewellyn's Pride, after being badly placed, came home fast, just in front of Queen Author, who also finished strongly. Sure was fourth, just in front of a bunch. Kaydus paid a surprising dividend, in view of his good showing in the chief event earlier in the day. The change to E. C. McDermott's stable has benefited him. Editor, Gunmetal, and Golden Cross were the early leaders in the Final Handicap, Royal Comrade, Great fought, Rocks Ahead, and Wilbur White being next after two furlongs. Along the back Editor went on from Royal Comrade and Rocks Ahead, these three leading Great Thought and Goldfield to the home turn. Rocks Ahead took charge when the straight was reached and won with ease by a length from Goldfield. Three lengths further back came Noble Prince, just m front of Golden Cross. The winner s display was impressive, but Noble Prince put up an exceptional perform.ance for the last half-mile, after failing to go off right and being fifty yards to the bad along the back.
