Pay Up was fourth. Winner bred in France" by owner, and trained by Frank Butters at Newmarket. Time, 2min 33 4-ssec. FRENZY OF DELIGHT. Although "a larger-crowd than ever gathered at Epsom the exodus from London was later. It is becoming later every year. During the morning the roads were little busier than normal. Heavy clouds.and a chilly wind made it an overcoat Derby. There were fewer gipsies to be seen on the downs. They are fast disappearing and declare that the Derby is becoming more select every year.

After lunch the crowd, believed to be a record, stretched in a solid mass, from Tattenham Corner to the grandstand.' : : ■ ■ , ■ •

The Derby was a magnificent race. MahmoUd's time was a record. The jockey, Charlie Smirke, does not know the meaning of nerves. He displayed superb coolness and judgment,- and did not attempt to force the pace.

Carioca was early away and led to the half-mile from Midstream and Pay Up. Thankerton stole the lead down the. hill from Bala Hissar and Pay Up and was three lengths ahead into the straight but was unable to stay, Mahmoud shot up, with Taj Akbar gallantly attempting to overhaul his stable companion. Mahmoud, however, won easily. . .

The crowd in frenzied excitement cheered the ■ Aga Khan as Mahmoud was led in. Mahmoud is a beautiful grey horse, only the third of that colour, to win the Derby.

The Aga Khan, overcome with delight, said he had realised: his ambition to win the Derby three times. .'...
