MORTGAGE BILL
COMING NEXT WEEK
CONTROL OF CORPORATION
EXTENDED SITTINGS
New legislation to be introduced by the Government next week will include a measure dealing with the con- j trol of the Mortgage .Corporation. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) stated today that the Bill, which would come down either on Wednesday or Thursday next, would impose on the Mortgage Corporation control similar to that which existed in the State Advances Department. It would take the private element out of it altogether. Another measure that will probably make its reappearance will be a Bill dealing with the question of rent, which, as has already been indicated by the Prime. Minister, will be passed before the House adjourns about the end of this month. It is the Govern 7 ment's intention also to pass legislation dealing with the restoration of wages and salaries. Mr. Savage indicated that in order to .dispose of the programme immediately ahead of it, it might be necessary to ask the House to sit for extended hours. "I don't think the House will sit this Monday," he said, "but it may have to do so i the following week. We will do anything to get our legislation through. We have learned a few things, and if I may be pardcned for saying so, the sky's the limit. Reactionary things have been done overnight in the past, and why should we not So progressive things in the same way?" On Tuesday night the second reading debate on the Transport Licensing Amendment Bill-will open.
