According to Roy de G& ns, the negro boxer who is under engag ament to the Southland Association, ,• boxing is thriving in America, hen 3 the general public is more appreciative of a good fight. "Boxing is encourq ged more in America than in * Australian or for that matter, anywhere. else ; in.' the world," de Gans' told the "Southland Times." "Boxing is taught in the! j'schools, and in most of .the colleges ffyrms part of the sports' curriculum. • "In this way the real aii'; of boxing is^instilled into the mind o\" the scholars at .an early age,. which sso much easier and comes more raai iural than when the pupil has, practical y matured. , CATCH 'EM YOTJJJ^. "Working on the principled of 'you can't teach an old dog any ae\r tricks' how much easier is it to teach ti ie pupil while young so that, he can! master every phase of the game bei"ore he enters the ring and contests bii', fights. "There'is more money in i professional boxing: in America than Am Australia," continued de Gans. "OF; course the expenses incurred-in thelv.olding of contests are not so heavy, because no promoter is forced to pay tiie expenses of an importation. Ea rii city and township has its own local froxers, and these are matched with p irformers from neighbouring- towns. '.Hie interest manifest in these matcl es is much greater, as the local *■■■-. fans are, of course, urging their boys Via victory. • .. . ; , ■ '. -j ' "The promoter, therefore,: not h'jiving to pay heavy staging expenses, is*.able to give a higher percentage of the Ifgatt takings to the fighters." ;.
