BIG;HGpSE AT INVERCARGILL
i.ne ,l-ivic rneatre at invercargiU was packed to the doors for the fifteenround professi6nal bout between the American negro Roy de Gansand the New Zealand heavyweight champion Ray NicoL The. bout went the full distance and de Gans won by a comfortable margin of. points (comments the ."Southland News"). He won nine rounds, Nicol three, and three were even, and in practically every department the visitor showed a marked superiority. ' ,Gans • proved a clever : two-handed boxer-fighter and carried considerable •kick in both gloves;: but it was his wonderful speed and brilliant footwork that was the most arresting
feature of his display and it is doubtful if anything better in that respect has ever been seen in a local (ring. He was coolness personified. Nicol again relied on his ruggedness to a great extent and indulged in boring but the American repeatedly provided a good counter-to the Southlander's tactics and staged most of the bright, spots. There was a lot of holding by both men but Nicol was.-the worst - offender ,and the final round was mostly, wrestling., De Gans was trained to perfection, and was not the least distressed at the finish. It was a good bout in parts and there is no doubt that de Gans has an attractive style. ~..■ ■..-.■;,; The dates for the Dominion amateur championships given in the boxing fixtures in these columns last • week should ■ have been marked "tentative." As reported the previous day, the local association has nbf yet 'finally decided when the tourney is to be held* ""
