BALL AT HASTINGS
NGA TAWA AND "OLD BOYS"

The Assembly Hall at Hastings was filled with dancers and onlookers on Friday evening when old pupils of Nga Tawa and Wanganui College held their annual ball. Lovely decorations In Blue and gold for Wanganui and brown and gold for Nga Tawa made the hall and supperroom a very gay scene. The stage was charmingly and comfortably arranged for sitting out with rugs and easy chairs and masses of flowers. School banners were placed around the walls. Mr. Gilligan (headmaster of Wanganui College), with Mrs, Gilligan, were guests, and were staying with Mr. and Mrs. V. Hoadley (Hastings) for the occasion. Miss Mitchell (headmistress of Nga Tawa) was another guest together with her hostess, Mrs. H. M. Wilson (Hastings). The honorary secretaries were Messrs. Bruce Kelly and Douglas Lindsay for Wanganui College, and Miss Mary Wilson for Nga Tawa. Their organisation was excellent, and the arrangements of the whole function left nothing to be desired. . i There were two debutantes, Miss Margaret Grant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Grant, of Napier, and Miss
Mary Nation, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E..Nation, Waipawa. The committee included Mrs. H. V. Hoadley, Mrs. yon Kettle • (NapierT, Mrs. H. M. Wilson, Mrs. Melville Bell, Mrs. W. Harrison, Mrs. A; 1. Rainbow, Mrs. Peter Holmes, Misses M. Wilson, L. and P. Candy, J. Wilson, Patricia Hoadley, Nancy Logan, and Mary Rainbow. . . . - . On arrival at the ball Mrs. Gilligan and Miss Mitchell were presented with shoulder sprays. ' ~ ■: The president for New Zealand of Wanganui Old Boys' Association (Mr. H. V. Hoadley) was present with Mrs. Hoadley, the latter wearing a graceful gown of burgundy red lace; Mr. yon Kettle (president of the Hawke's Bay branch) and Mrs. Kettle, ;the latter.in a model gown of. dull red;crepe satin. Mrs. Gilligan wore a well-cut frock of white French crepe. Miss Mitchell wore a smart-frock slightly trained, of bottle green, having a.waist-length cape lined with gold. . , . Prior to the ball a large dinner party organised by Mrs. H. V. Hoadley, at which about 80 people were present, was given, and theft were various other dinner parties, guests being present from all parts of the North Island. Mr. and Mrs. D. Willis, of Marton, brought a party with them and many came over from Wanganui. The ball -was one of the largest and most successful held in Hastings for many years, this being greatly due to the energetic efforts of the secretaries, the
