LENDING A HAND

RUGBY REFEREE'S GOOD

DEED

A case of true sportsmanship was seen at Nairnville on Saturday when a well-known Rugby referee, Mr. Les Scadden, turned out for Onslow First B Division Association football team and kept goal.

Mr. Scadden had been appointed referee for the Onslow-Pirates Rugby game, but as Pirates could not muster a full side they defaulted to Onslow. At the same time it was found that the referee for the Association game, Technical Old Boys v. Onslow, was missing. Mr. Scadden was asked if he would officiate, but he refused, as he was not well enough up in Soccer rules. Onslow then found they were one man short and Mr. Scadden offered to fill the vacancy.

Although Onslow had five goals scored against them, Mr. Scadden kept goal very well, and made some beautiful saves. On leaving the field he was congratulated by both teams on his play and on his sporting action.
