FERRIER'S GOLF
PLAY IN SCOTLAND
BEATEN BY JACK MCLEAN
LONDON, April 25.
Playing at Carnoustie for Midlands of Scotland against the West, Ferrier encountered in the singles the Melbourne Centenary champion, Jack McLean, on the eve of their possible meeting in the Scottish championship, of which McLean was three times winner.
Ferrier secured an immediate lead with a 3. He was bunkered at the fourth and the fifth, but made great recoveries, and halved both. Following a tremendous drive at the sixth, the longest hole of 521 yards, Ferrier won with a birdie 4 to become 2 up. It was now bitterly cold, the rain handicapping Ferrier, whose long drive at the seventh was out of bounds and he lost the hole, but turned 1 up. McLean squared at the eleventh, and led for the first time at the fourteenth, clinching the victory by 2 and 1 at the long and difficult seventeenth, where Ferrier was first in a bunker and then in the river.
Ferrier, in the foursomes, partnered J. H. Brodlie, the ex-Scottish University champion, against the Glasgow players McCallum and Peters. A bitter gale was blowing during the play, but Ferrier was more impressive than in the singles, hitting many fine shots. Brodlie sank long putts, and the pair were finally victorious by 5 and 4. Ferrier says he quite pleased with his form and hopes to do creditably in the championship.
