UNIVERSITY TITLES
EASTER TOURNAMENT
It would seem that the finals of the tennis tournament of the four University Colleges will really be between Victoria College and Canterbury, the present holders of the tennis shield. J. J. and B. McCarthy are Victoria's strongest players, and Miss Gerrard will be a tower of strength in the women's games. The following are the latest views from Canterbury College on the prospects of the team from that centre.
"In last year's tourney the tennis teams' excellent performance in securing four out of five titles was the decisive factor in bringing the Tournament Shield to Canterbury.
"Although the absence of Misses Gerrard and Morrison and Messrs.' Widdup and Heenan necessitates the introduction of five untried players into this year's team, the inclusion of Ivan Corich, Canterbury tennis star, , should make at least two titles certain.
"Men's Singles.—Corich and Duffield contesting the singles title should meet in the final, with Corich' the probable winner. ■
"Men's Doubles.—Duffleld and Walls last year's winners, appear to be more likely prospects than Dougall and Rainey who are unknown quantities.
"Women's Singles.—Miss Wauchop, the present title holder, with added experience in club competition this season, seems a likely winner. Miss Nurse is a useful second string.
"Women's Doubles.—Misses Wauchop and Wright, should they combine well, appear to' have a better chance than Misses Hoscoe and Hobbs, the latter being new to tournament play.
"Combined Doubles.—The attractive forceful play of both Corich and Miss Wright will probably triumph over the steadiness of Wall and Miss Eoscoe, should they meet in the final."
