A NEW ZEALAND AUTHOR

(To the Editor.) Sir,—The appreciated article by "New. Zealander" in the 'Evening Post" of the 4th inst. on the writings of James Cowan induced a perusal of the original article which prompted it, viz., "Famous New Zealanders, No. 37, in the current issue of the "N.Z. Railways Magazine." In that article the writer, Oriwa Keripi, states that Mr. Cowan left the Auckland 'Star' to join the Tourist Department under the late Mr T E Donne.' Knowing Captam T. E Donne somewhat well, I feel sure he will read with great pleasure and interest that he has been prematurely given his long quietus. Happily, he is still with us and in London, or was so up to last Christmas, and -as the author of several books about New Zealand, on the Maori, rod fishing, deer stalking, game animals, etc., and also the norn de plume writer of a series of articles on British crime mysteries and tragedies any recognition given him by ( the PE.N. Club, or the co-relative New Zealand Authors' Week Society, should not convey that Captain Donne, once a prominent officer in the New Zealand Railway Department, and for a long time head of the Department 'of Industries, Commerce, and Tourist, has joined the great sleeping company of kings, counsellors,, and others.—l am, etc.,

H. FILDES,
