SIR CHARLES STATHAM'S
POSITION
■ A statement as to his position in the Legislative Council was made by Sir Charles: Statham, when speaking in the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon. Incidentally, although Sir Charles, has been a member of the House of Kepresentatives for a long period, this was his first speech in a debate since his appointment to the Speakership of the House of Representatives thirteen years ago.
Sir Charles said that he had entered the Council on the recommendation of the Government of the day, and very ' gracefully ' the Government had made no stipulations whatsoever as to his appointment. (Hear, hear.) He agreed with previous speakers who had expressed the opinion that it was not the business of a nominated body to obstruct policy measures of the Government, but that did not mean that members should not have the right to criticise.
