ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

BRIGADE ACTIVITIES

In addition to the services being tendered by members of the brigade at the Easter Show this week, applications have been made for members to be on duty in connection with the New Zealand University tournament over Easter as follows:—Wellington East Girls' College: Basketball. Basin Beserve: Easter Saturday and Monday, University athletic tournament (Wellington Ambulance .Division). Thorndon Baths: Swimming championships, Saturday (Wellington Ambulance Division).

The position of corps surgeon to the Wellington Corps, which has been vacant for some time, is being filled by. the promotion of Dr. C. G. Kemp from divisional surgeon to the Y.W.C.A. Nursing Division. Dr. Kemp's services to the brigade in the past have been of inestimable value, and his appointment as corps surgeon is a further step in the progressive policy of the Wellington Corps. At the next corps meeting on April 16, Dr. Kemp will lecture on antiseptics and disinfectants, and a full attendance is requested. " During the Easter holidays about forty members of the Ambulance Cadet Divisions, under their officers, will spend four days in camp at Silverstream. An excellent camp syllabus has been drawn up and the boys are assured of a thoroughly useful and enjoyable vacation. The camp site, which has kindly been granted by Goodwin and Chichester, Ltd., is situated near the tearooms at the Pinehaven Estate, and members of the brigade and parents and friends are cordially invited to visit the camp on the afternoon of Kaster Monday.

DIVISIONAL NOTES. ~ Wellington East Ambulance Division.—A parade of the division was held on Thursday last under Divisional Superintendent W. Whitely; For the work of the evening, stretcher drill, the division was handed over to Ambulance Officer T. Allcock, who put the members through the various movements in crossing obstacles. The division then went into general business, the following duties being arranged for the Winter Show:—April 8, Superintendent W. Whitely, Privates Hyland and Philpott; April 9, Cadet Officer B. Shields, Privates Willard and Marchant; April 11, Sergeant P. C. Glensor, Privates Hyland, Philpott, and Strachan; April 13, Cadet Superintendent Turner, Privates Mander and Hyland; April 14, Ambulance' Officer T. Allcock, Cadet Officer W. Goodwin, and Private Newson. A special lecture is being arranged for the next parade on; April '23, and all members are requested to attend. ;

■>■ Wellington Nursing Division.—The Wellington Nursing Division held, its fortnightly meeting on Monday, when there was a very good attendance- and practical work in first aid and transport was carried out under the direc-; tion of Mrs. Wilson, lady, superintend : dent, and Miss Bates, lady ambulance officer. Members were pleased to hear of a slight improvement in. the health of Miss Hay, divisional secretary, and .all wish her a speedy recovery. Nineteen members were on duty at the Easter Show on April 1 and 2,, with a total of 60£ hours, duty. Seven cases were attended to. • :

'-; Y.W.C.A. Nursing Division.—Mrs. Russell presided over a good attendance at the last meeting of the division. Ten members of the newlyformed Y.W.C.A. No. 2 Nursing Division were also present. The funds in hand were equally divided between the .two divisions.

A motion of sympathy with Ambulance Sister Mrs. Cunningham on the death of her mother, Mrs.' Smith, was passed, the members standing, in silence. Mrs. Smith was well known -Jo ambulance members in Wellington '•for her hospitality. Notice was received of Dr. C, Gordon Kemp's promotion from divisional to corps surgeon, and a motion of congratulation to him was'passed. The position of divisional surgeon is now vacant. Three new members were proposed and.welcomed to the division. It was reported the "first aid class" had commenced at the Y.W.C.A. on Monday, March 30, when thirty candidates were enrolled. Mrs. Russell and Miss Hiscock. are the demonstrators. Sixteen attendances on hospital duty, with 42 hours, were reported for the month of March. Eight ; ■' members volunteered for duty at the Easter Show first aid dressing station, Mrs. Russell and . Mrs. Symes to be in charge. Miss Marjory Pedlar, donor of the Marjory Pedlar Cup for individual home nursing, who has been on extended sick leave, was present, and received a hearty welcome. Arrangements are being made for her transfer to the Rotorua Nursing Division, leave of absence being granted till then. The practical work of the evening was poultice making and fomentations, under the direction of Lady Ambulance Officer Mrs. Symes,- assisted by Ambulance Sister L. Clark. APPOINTMENTS AND AWARDS. ' The. following appointments in the Wellington district have been approved by the Chief Commissioner for the Dominion:— Wellington Corps: S. I. Cadet proficiency badges have been Issued for the following members of the same division who have qualified in the subjects stated:—Cadets Joyce Brooky (fire fighting, physical exercises, hygiene, and nursing), Florence Wright, Eileen Bezer, and Catherine Doherty (in same subjects).

The Wanganui district competitions, usually held at Easter,, are this year being held on Saturday, April 18. The entries are a record.
