URGED TO SPEED
TAXI-DRIVER'S EXCUSE
The excuse that he was urged on by his passengers was put forward by Joseph Condon, a taxi-driver, who appeared in the Magistrate's Court today before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., charged with driving at a dangerous speed. Mr. P. Verschaffelt appeared for the defendant.
Traffic Inspector F. G. Tickncr said that he had seen the taxi at 5.40 p.m. on March 6 going south on the Hutt Road. Its speed south of Onslow Road was 50 miles per hour. The traffic was heavy at the time, and there were six passengers in the car, three men and three women.
Mr. Verschaffelt said that his client had been urged on by the passengers, one of whom was employed in a hotel, and had to be there by 6 p.m. The car had a governor fitted which limited its speed to 50 miles per hour. The defendant was convicted and fined £3 and costs.
