NAVY LEAGUE ATTITUDE
Reference was made at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Navy League on Tuesday to the controversy that has been carried on in the Press recently on the subject of the development of the Air Force in New Zealand to a higher standard of effectiveness. Several correspondents, said the secretary, Mr. R. Darroch, had implied that the Navy League was out of date in its ideas,'as .the Navy was useless in defending the country. He maintained in the first place that the Navy was by no means useless; he knew that without control of the sea we would be helpless; and in the second place, the Navy League, with the support also of Admiral' Harper, had always held the view that the three services should all be more adequately provided for. He quoted from a speech by the president, Sir James Grose, at the annual conference of Navy League branches m New Zealand in support of his contention.
