COLLAPSE OF BALCONY
SEVERAL PEOPLE INJURED
SYDNEY, April 8.
During an auction sale of furniture at the Macquarie View Hotel at Dubbo this afternoon, a balcony on which about 40 men, women, and children were standing, collapsed into the street.
A scene of great confusion followed, the screams of women and children being heard all over the town. Townsmen hurriedly extricated the injured, numbering at least 20, and sent them to the local hospital.
Nobody was seriously hurt, although many were treated for cuts, abrasions, bruises, and severe shock. Several persons were hidden under a mass of splintered wood, bedding, and broken crockery which fell with the balcony. One woman clung to a verandah bracket with one hand, held her child in the other, and was suspended in mid-air for nearly two" minutes before she was rescued with a ladder. Five doctors and all available police and firemen worked strenuously at the scene for half an hour extricating imprisoned people and their belongings.
