MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the. Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. J.. W. Andrews; presided. ; . , It was decided to rescind the bylaw giving power to erect garages on the street line with a view to making it compulsory where the size of the section allowed, to have garages either at the side or at the rear of dwellings. A request for the withdrawal of a notice requiring the owner of a hedge to cut ' it 'back to give better visibility at a corner was refused. The owner threatened, if the notice was not withdrawn, to test the validity of the bylaw oh the ground that it was .unreasonable. . • ' „• . T, I The Bandmaster' of the Civic Band reported that the band had visited the mental hospital to give a performance and was taking part in a parade of massed bands. It was decided under certain conditions to agree to the sale of one of the council's sections in Ward Street. Pending the disclosure of the Government policy regarding the control of motor traffic, it was decided to take no further action for the present in appointing a' traffic officer in conjunction with the Petone borough. The committee appointed to consider the remission of penalties on overdue rates reported that penalties up to £67 15s 9d had been remitted. Permission was given'to Mr. E. Hutt, director of reserves, to report to the Hutt Park Committee on the question of tree planting on the park. The Wellington Women's Hockey Association was granted the use of two grounds on Trafalgar Park at a rental of £10 per ground. The tenders of Mr. J. Anderson and Mrs. E. W. Booth of £5 each were accepted for the selling rights at'the recreation ground and Nae Nae reserve respectively. , The Director of Reserves stated that the granting of, selling rights would not increase the work of clearing the ground of litter after matches. . — The reserves committee was granted permission to visit McLean Park, Napier, in order to study floodlighting. It was decided'to grant the contractors for rubbish removal a further £50 a year for an extended contract for three years. Councillors Dowse and Hall objected on the ground that the work should be done by day labour and not by contract. Councillor Dowse, while commending the work done by the contractors, which was, he said, thorough and efficient, was of the opinion that the amount paid was too small. ■ . • ■■■.-.

The council decided to join the Employers' Federation with a view to pending negotiations with the Drivers' Union for a new award.

The 1935 balance-sheet was received with one "tag" relating to the size of the bank overdraft. The Mayor remarked that the overdraft was being steadily reduced and he hoped' that this would be the last occasion when the "tag" would be necessary.

The borough inspector, Mr. J. Fletcher, gave Councillor Macaskill an assurance that he knew of no case where a supplier of milk was evading the provision requiring the installation of a steam plant for bottle cleaning.
