"O.K. CHIEF"

During a speech at the opening luncheon of the South London Exhibition at Crystal Palace recently, Mr. J. H. Thomas, Colonial Secretary, turned to the Earl of Plymouth, Under-Secfe-tary for the Colonies, and asked: "How does it feel to be Under-Secretary to a damned democrat like me?" When Lord Plymouth's turn came to speak, he replied succinctly, "0.X., Chief.-" ■ ' Mr. Thomas, who presided at the luncheon, explained that he had to leave early for the House of Commons to answer questions. "If I were not in my place on time in the House," he said, "there would be a series of questions such as 'What do you pay this fellow £5000 a year for?'" The Crystal Palace, said Mr. Thomas, was a magnificent boon to the inhabitants of South London, and the sixth exhibition was larger than all the .preceding ones.
