UNIVERSITY MATCHES

TOURNAMENT AT EASTER

A number of provincial representatives and several members of North and South Island representative basketball teams will be playing in the basketball tournament of tne lour University Colleges to be held in Wellington at Easter. The matches, which will be a splendid opening for the Wellington basketball season, will be played on Easter Monday morning on the courts of the Wellington East Girls' College. In the event of a strong wind, Mount Cook School courts will be used, and provision has even been made in case of rain by preparations at Garrison Hall, Buckle Street. The Auckland University College basketball team contains four AuckHand provincial representatives, Misses [J. Stichbury, N. Jacombs, M. Shaw, and B. Campbell. Miss N. Jacombs is also a North Island representative, and Miss N. McLeod holds a New Zealand University blue for basketball. Miss Janet Grainger, of Victoria, is a North Island representative, and Miss M. Gibbons a Wellington provincial representative. Two other members of the team, Misses Pilch er and Bell, are well up to provincial standard, and the team as a whole should have an excellent chance in the competition. Both Canterbury and Otago also have strong teams. Miss O'Meara was an Otago provincial representative last year and the mainstay of the Otago team, which was the runner-up in the 1935 tournament. Four of the Canterbury players took part last year. It is doubtful, however, that either of these teams will be able to defeat Auckland, which has one of the strongest teams in New Zealand open competition. Only once in the last nine years has Auckland been defeated and that was by Victoria in 1933.

The representative teams of the four colleges are as follows:—• Auckland University College.—M. Shaw (captain), B. Campbell, N. McLeod, N. Jacombs, M. Martin, M. Smeed, J. Stichbury, M. Bartrum, N. Woodward, A. Simpson (emergency). Otago University College.—A. O'Meara, O. Wright (captain), C. Douglas, K. McDonall, M. Ongley, A. G. Liddell, G. M. Avery, M. C. Paterson, J. S.
