RIFLE SHOOTING
UNIVERSITY CLUB
TOURNAMENT MATCH
The Victoria University College Defence Rifle Club had a holiday, on Saturday last, but on.the previous Saturday the club fired in the Haslam Shield match, the shooting event in the annual inter-University College too rn thfday of the match there was clear weather and only a light right wind—conditions which offset to a certain extent the loss through ram of the match rehearsal scheduled .for March 21. The match was supervised by Staff Sergeants-Major. Ritzema (firing point) and Kidman (butts). The practices were application, snap and rapid at 300 yards, and application at 600 yards. The names of the members of the team were published some days ago, together with the names of the men who were to represent in their several centres the Auckland and Canterbury University Colleges and the' University of Otago. The scores obtained for V.U.C. will not be available until the * tournament delegates meet at Easter, but it is unofficially reported that A. A. Gawith I gained first place for V.U.C, with P. IG. Pasley second. | A new development in University rifle-shooting has been an invitation to college rifle club presidents, together with their^Haslam top scorers, to meet in Wellington (this year's tournament centre) at Easter time. The rules governing the Haslam Shield contest will then be reviewed, and the visitors will', if possible, be given an opportunity to fire on the notoriously tricky Trentham range. An endeavour is at present being made to arrange a match on Saturday next between a combined ' University team and a scratch team drawn from the clubs affiliated to the Wellington Rifle Association. Should this endeavour succeed, it will be for the University men a most interesting match, for,-so-far as is--known, .it will be the first occasion on whiclv riflemen representing each of the several University Colleges will have met and fired together. .
