NEWNHAM COLLEGE

An appeal for at least £100,000 to reconstruct. Newnham College, Cambridge, was to be launched at a meeting at 10 Downing Street on March 31. Mr. Baldwin, who is Chancellor of Cambridge University, intended to preside.

Newnham, the pioneer with Girton College of higher education for women, was built in 1875. The buildings are now out of date, expensive to run, and inconvenient. The reconstruction scheme includes the following new buildings: A court, to contain students' and fellows' rooms, an assembly hall, additional rooms for students in two of the halls of residence, alterations in each of the halls to.; relieve overcrowding, and fives and squash rackets courts.

The university allows a maximum of 500 undergraduates between Newnham and Girton. Newnham has 230 in the present buildings and 50 outside. Already subscriptions towards the building fund are coming in from former Newnham students, many of whom are- scattered throughout the world. There are 3939 names on the college records. The architect of the new buildings will be Miss Elizabeth Scott, designer of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Slratford-on-Avon.
